A Mayo county councillor has stepped down from the HSE regional west forum in protest against the removal of breast cancer surgical and diagnostic services from Mayo General Hospital. Fine Gael Councillor Patsy O’Brien, the man who topped the poll in the Claremorris electoral area and received the highest number of votes of all candidates in Mayo in the June local elections, has not sought to be re-appointed to the health forum, having served on it since its inception. Cllr O’Brien told the Mayo Advertiser that the forum was “too political” and he expressed his disappointment in Mayo’s two Fianna Fáil TDs for not ensuring the services remained.

Galway writer Maureen Gallagher has been awarded first prize in the Leyney Writers 2009 Short Story Competition.

President of Ireland Mary McAleese presided at a ceremony last Monday to mark the election of Achill-based visual artist Camille Souter and composer Seóirse Bodley as Saoithe in Aosdána. The honour of Saoi is bestowed for singular and sustained distinction in the arts, and Monday last the President presented both artists with the symbol of the office, a gold torc. The ceremony took place at the Arts Council’s offices at 70 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, which is also the headquarters of Aosdána.

Local Fine Gael senator and party spokesperson on education in the senate Fidelma Healy Eames is urging people to attend a meeting in the city tonight (Thursday) which will highlight what she terms the Government’s “cruel and callous” education cuts in Budget ‘09.

Hailed by the Irish Independent for his countless MC skills, Neil is the regular compere at several gigs round Dublin. He has performed all over Ireland as well as at the prestigious Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. He featured in both series of the TV stand-up show Liffey Laughs. Neil also presented the RTE television series covering the Montreal festival for two years in a row as well as The World Stands Up for Paramount.
